Teeth Whitening

Brighten Your Teeth for a Rejuvenated Smile

Tooth enamel is porous, allowing staining or coloring elements in food and tobacco to penetrate into your tooth enamel, often far below the surface.

This can cause your teeth to become yellow, stained or darkened over time, making it difficult to want to smile.

Teeth whitening is a fast and simple way to dramatically improve your smile and boost your confidence. Dr. Bergmann and Dr. Izu provide customized trays and high-quality, professional-grade whitening gel to enable you to whiten your teeth on your schedule, and in the convenience of your own home.

Why Get Professional Teeth Whitening?

There are many teeth whitening options available outside the dental office, such as over-the-counter whitening products and mall kiosk stations that give fast whitening. However, these solutions are not professional-grade and do not have the strength necessary to remove anything but surface stains.

Only a dentist can legally offer whitening gel that is of sufficient strength to eliminate the ingrained stains that can be found in the microcracks of the tooth enamel and deep below the tooth surface.

Your dentist will examine the teeth visible in your smile and inform you if there are fillings or crowns that will not change color. You need to know before you start bleaching whether additional dental work is necessary to complete your whiter smile.

Our trays are safer

Our trays are also safer than those used in nonprofessional settings. Over-the-counter and kiosk station whitening trays offer only a limited number of sizes and often do not fit well. Improperly fitting trays may cause gel to leak and can cause gum irritation. Our trays are always custom-fitted and are very snug and comfortable. They are also customized to apply more bleaching gel in areas where it is needed, and no gel in areas where veneers or other restorations cover your teeth (and where it is not needed).

Our Opalescence® Home Whitening Kits with Customized Trays

We use Opalescence brand professional bleaching gel for our take-home trays, and offer several different concentrations of gel. The doctor will explain the costs and advantages of each option and will recommend which option will work best for you following a consultation and oral exam.

How Opalescence whitening gel works

Opalescence bleaching gel contains an active whitening agent that penetrates below the surface enamel to get to the underlying discoloration and stains. Oxygen molecules in the whitening agent react with the molecules in the stains and discolorations, breaking the bonds that hold them together. The oxygen spreads and whitens your entire tooth.

Opalescence whitening formula is very safe to use and causes little to no sensitivity.

Customized trays for optimum results

After the oral exam, an impression will be taken of your teeth, from which your custom-fitted whitening trays will be made. Our trays can be made to carry extra gel in certain areas needing more concentration, so that those areas can be whitened more than others. We customize the trays so that they have no gel reservoir around dental crowns or bridges, where bleaching is unnecessary.

Instructions

The doctor will give you full instructions when you receive your custom trays and whitening gel, including how to apply the gel and how often and how long to wear the trays.

As you use the gel over successive days, you will start to see results very quickly. We will monitor your progress to ensure you are comfortable and are making good progress.

Help for sensitivity

Though this is very rare, if you have any problems with sensitivity while using the gel, the doctor will give you some fluoride gel to use on alternate days along with your whitening formula. This will reduce your sensitivity and allow your whitening to remain comfortable.
